I decided to go to college because I knew that college would open up opportunities for me when I graduate. Another reason why I decided to attend college because nobody in my family went to college except my Grandma and Aunt. To me is like they are handing down the torch or I'm starting a new tradition by going to college. I always wanted to go to Converse when I was a little girl. Converse is a prestigious music and plus they lowered their tuition, so that even increased my interest in going to Converse. I also wanted to prove to people that just because I'm black I would still have equal opportunity in getting into the school. When I was in High school, this career counselor told me that I wasnt going to be accepted into the school because of my grades and that I was black.
When I heard the career counselor say that, that pushed me even more. That incident pushed me into becoming a Converse Connie =). I wanted to study music at Converse because I knew that I would find my creativity. Right now as a freshmen I feel as though I haven't reached my full potential. I hope when I'm a senior I will reach my goal at being better than what I expected.
Converse is a small school which means teachers will be able to pay special attention to their students. Teachers will connect and get a better understanding with each individual in their class. I agree with everything Jullian Gordon said. I liked how he said that we as students should pave our own street instead of taking the easy street. For instance, I want to be a vocal performance major. I already have a 50% chance of being an Opera singer traveling around the world. But I also have the other 50%of being nothing and working at a minimum wage job.
This video made me think of what I want to be or go when I graduate from college. One main point I gained from this video is to keep working for what I want and to make my own Street.
Hi, Sherami, and welcome to Converse and the Petrie School! I'm so glad that you pursued your own vision to get here--really, to be one of the first in your family to attend college is an impressive feat. Did you connect with the Trailblazers program for first-generation college students? If not, wander over to the Center for Student Success and Development and talk to someone about it. They have some great programs for folks in your shoes.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it's GREAT that you didn't let anyone lower your self-expectations because of your race. You can do ANYTHING. (Actually, I'm kind of appalled that a career counselor would imply that race would prevent you from getting into college.)
In future blogs, do work harder to clean up your writing. I think that if you go back and reread this blog entry you'll find several sentences that could be constructed more cleanly and clearly. Musicians actually find themselves doing quite a bit of writing, so it's something you really want to pursue excellence in.
Hey Sherami, first off I thoroughly enjoyed your blog and I think it's super cool that you're proving people wrong by coming here. As the TED talk said college is the perfect place to find yourself and push boundaries. I think Converse is no exception :)
ReplyDeleteSherami, this post put me through a couple different emotions. You are an amazing person for dealing with that counselor and the fact that all that experience did was motivate you says a lot about your character. Reading that, however, angered me, but I loved your road pavement quote. It's so true. We should be doing that and I try to, but i tend doubt myself every step of the way.
ReplyDeleteHey Sham! I totally get what you're saying about the lowered tuition! I knew I was going to go to college, it was just a matter of where. And dishing out 40,000 dollars just wasn't an option.
